The History of Costco
The company's first location, opened in 1976under the Price Club name, was in aconverted airplane hangar on MorenaBoulevard in San Diego. Originally servingonly small businesses, the company found itcould achieve far greater buying clout by alsoserving a selected audience of non-businessmembers. With that change, the growth of thewarehouse club industry was off and runningIn 1983, the first Costco warehouse locationwas opened in Seattle. Costco became thefirst company ever to grow from zero to $3billion in sales in less than six years. WhenCostco and Price Club merged in 1993, thecombined company, operating under the namePriceCostco, had 206 locations generating$16 billion in annual sales
